Ekurhuleni’s Clement serves up a brilliant competition entry

Boksburg resident Clement Maenetja (23) has entered a stunning range of ceramic plates into this year’s Innibos National Craft Awards.

Although the format of the judging and the prize-giving may yet be altered as a result of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the competition is going ahead.

Now in its fourth year, it is open to crafters from around the country. All disciplines are welcome to compete for the R165 000 is prize money. The closing date is midnight on 1 May.

Clement started doing art in school and fell in love with ceramics while at the Tshwane University of Technology. “I love working with clay because it is easily to manipulate yet remains challenging.”

His plates were moulded from a mix of clay and glazed to resemble enamel dishes. The seeds inside were also created from clay.

“My work explores my personal history and also juxtaposes my memories with the surroundings in which I grew up.”

Entering is easy

Crafters need simply take a photo of their entry – next to a matchbox for size of scale, and either email it to crafts@innibos.co.za or send it to 071 621 3597 via MMS or WhatsApp. There is no entry fee.

Ts&Cs apply and can be found on the competition’s Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/Innibosnationalcraftawards.

Remember to include your name, the town in which you live and your contact details.

Entrants who have not heard from the organisers within 30 days of the closing date must take it as given that they did not make the shortlist for final judging.

This year, the National Department of Arts and Culture sponsored four additional categories: Corporate Gifts, Beaded Craft Products, Craft Produced Using Recycled Materials and Souvenirs. Each carries prize money of R20 000. The overall winner of the competition – chosen from across all disciplines – walks away with R50 000, the first runner-up with R20 000 and the second runner-up with R15 000.
