Woman (76) does first skydive

G0060842Eunice de Jager decided, at the age of 76, to do her first tandem skydive. Her jump took place on April 5 through the Johannesburg Skydiving Club in Carletonville. “It was the most amazing and exhilarating experience ever,” says the resident of Rand Aid Association retirement village Thornhill Manor. She flew from the Panaroma Airfield to the skydiving club in a small plane owned and piloted by her son Theo.

Thornhill Manor Garden Club

P1130625 (640x480)Started six years ago by resident Wendy Hunt, the Thornhill Manor Garden Club is blooming. With over 30 members today, the group meets on a monthly basis to share gardening tips and anecdotes. At the March 20 meeting, Trevyn Riekert of the Garden Shop chatted to the club members about fuschias, which are popular in pots and baskets. With the Modderfontein-based Rand Aid retirement village boasting landscaped gardens and beautiful water features, the garden club members are never short of inspiration. Pictured are chairwoman Wendy Hunt and Dawn Burls with the beautiful Proteas that were grown by Dawn and raffled off at the meeting.

Thornhill Manor Probus Induction Dinner

probusThe Thornhill Manor Probus Club held its Induction Dinner on March 17 at the Rand Aid Association retirement village in Modderfontein. Seventy-six members enjoyed a delicious meal and a chance to interact with their peers, all former captains of industry, professionals and businessmen. Entertaining Robbie Vermont, himself a resident of Thornhill Manor, was MC and special guest was Rotary Edenvale President Pam Kemp. The 2015 President is Desmond Edgar, who was overseas on the night. Vice President is Bob Davies, Secretary Edna Magua, Treasurer Don Gaynam, while Enid Dixon and Jenny Brownson are committee members.  Pictured are Frayne Mathijs and Jen Cruickshank, who assisted in the running of the evening; Pam and Archie Kemp and Esme Erasmus (Thornhill Manor Manager).


Thornhill Manor St Patrick and wool for goodwill knitters

robbieFor they are jolly good fellows… Jen Cruickshank won the Thornhill Manor raffle and accepting her prize at the Rand Aid retirement village’s recent St Patrick’s dinner was husband John Cruickshank (bottom), with a little help from fellow resident Robbie Vermont. The prize was donated by the village’s sewing circle and all proceeds went towards purchasing wool to make much-needed blankets, scarves, beanies and gloves for the underprivileged.

Terence barbaraThornhill Manor residents Terence and Barbara Riley enjoyed the blarney at the Rand Aid Association retirement village’s St Patrick’s dinner on March 12. Held in the village’s community centre, 66 residents enjoyed a traditional Irish meal followed by dancing and Irish coffees.
