Clement plates up excellence

Boksburg resident Clement Maenetja may be in his early 20s, but his craft work is mature and smacks of years of experience.

The talented young man came third overall in the 2020 Innibos National Craft Awards. His series of ceramic plates, moulded from a mix of clay and then glazed to resemble enamel dishes, tell a story of his heritage and bring to mind his own childhood.

“My work explores my personal history and also juxtaposes my memories with the surroundings in which I grew up,” he says.

His childhood was spent in a rural Limpopo village and the seeds and plants that fill the plates he entered into the competition, could all be found in the area.

His talent was sharpened at the Tshwane University of Technology Faculty of Arts and Design, where he is now doing his post-graduate degree.

“Looking to my future, I want to create my own studio and give back to the community through skills transfer,” he says.
