Although Tradition Transformed, the first official event of this year’s Innibos Lowveld National Arts Festival, closed on July 4, art lovers can still experience the exhibition through a digital catalogue.
The showcase, which opened in Mbombela on June 30, featured 30 contemporary works demonstrating how traditional South African craft has evolved into a dynamic platform for art and design that reflects the country’s creativity and culture.
Curated by Art Aid Africa, an organisation dedicated to transforming indigenous skills into sustainable modern businesses, the exhibition brought together works by artisans previously featured in the National Craft Awards alongside emerging creatives. Dignitaries, artists and members of the public attended the exhibition, which celebrated the innovation and craftsmanship shaping South Africa’s contemporary craft landscape.
“We were delighted by the response from visitors to the work on display. The exhibition represents the journey of South African craft, showing how traditional skills continue to evolve into contemporary art and design while creating opportunities for talented artisans,” says John-Anthony Boerma of Art Aid Africa.
