Pierre turns metal into magic

Coming joint second in the Innibos National Craft Awards 2020 has given Pierre Fourie just the boost he needed.

A steel and wood maestro, Pierre’s majestic horse’s head, titled ‘Troy’, impressed the judges, who were in awe of his technical skill and the beauty of his piece.

“I am grateful for the exposure the competition has given me, and for the recognition of my work. It is one thing for friends to say your creation is good but quite another for experts in their field to do so,” he says.

The Krugersdorp resident says his pieces take lots of hard work. After the announcement of the winners of the annual competition on 26 June, Pierre was focused on perfecting a rhino head, the latest of his creations.

His fabulous metal sculptures start with a basic drawing. “I then make a steel frame to get the size and shape of the piece, before sizing, shaping and adding hundreds of individual strands of 4mm steel round bar to create a solid finish.”
