Another thrilling first for South Africa – Graskop Gorge Lift Co’s Cliff Walkway

Graskop Gorge Lift Co introduced its innovative new activity – the Cliff Walk – to the media and selected partners yesterday. The guests gathered on a platform one level up from the forest floor and were immersed in the natural wonder of the gorge. The platform’s backdrop of stunning rock formations, dripping water and lush vegetation provided décor more breathtaking than could be created by the human hand.

A FIRST-OF-ITS-KIND IN SOUTH AFRICA, the Cliff Walk has three elements to it – a walkway along the cliff face, two suspension bridges and a zipline. It offers a close-up experience of nature – allowing participants to get into places that would otherwise be inaccessible.

The Graskop Gorge Lift Co is unique in that it offers so many activities in one gorge. Where else can you do a cliff walk, dare yourself to do an extreme 70-metre cable swing or double zipline across the gorge, cross a 51-metre suspension bridge, ride a viewing lift into the forest below and enjoy an interpretive forest trail – all in one breathtaking gorge?

The guest speakers were Graskop Gorge Lift Co directors Oupa Pilane – who shared that 98 jobs have been created at the gorge; the Thaba Chweu Executive Mayor Clr Mogotle Friddah Nkadimeng – who said that the Cliff Walk will stimulate local economic growth; and the chairperson of the Thaba Chweu Local Economic Development Agency, Victor Mashego, who spoke about plans to address tourism shortcomings in the area.

After snacks, the guests were invited to experience the Cliff Walk for themselves, and their squeals of excitement when they returned to the platform via a zipline said all that needed to be said about the thrilling activity.

Participants must be over 1.2 metres tall and weigh under 120kg.
